Cosmology textbooks need rewriting! The early universe was more complex than we thought. JWST is revolutionizing our understanding of galaxy formation.
The Critique
Before we throw out decades of cosmology, let's consider the obvious: these are preliminary photometric redshifts with huge error bars, and stellar mass estimates based on assumed (not measured) stellar populations. The 'problem' might just be misidentified lower-redshift galaxies with dusty features mimicking high-z signatures. Previous 'crises' in early galaxy counts have evaporated upon spectroscopic follow-up. Also, selection effects — JWST is designed to find bright things, so finding bright things isn't surprising. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, not just extraordinary press releases.
Why It Matters
Premature paradigm shifts waste resources and confuse public understanding. Robust confirmation should precede theoretical upheaval.
What They Missed
No discussion of catastrophic errors in photometric redshift estimation or the impact of dust obscuration mimicking high-z colors. Also ignores that similar 'crises' in Hubble data resolved with better data.
